Propagation excellent in 6 MHz band in mid to late mornings!

The shortest day for Melbourne occurred on Thursday June 24, 2010, where
daylight was limited to 9h 32m and 41s!

Our sunrise is now at 7.36am (2132 UTC), and earliest sunset will be on July
1, at 5.11pm (0711 UTC).

Solar transit is now 12.10pm (0210 UTC), when the sun only reaches 28.8
degrees above the horizon.

From here in suburban Melbourne, the sun is due north at the transit, just
peeking out above the roof line!

This means that there are interesting opportunities to study midday
propagation on 6 MHz during the present period of negligible solar activity.

In fact, the 10.7 cm solar flux was down 75 on June 26, and the equivalent
smoothed sunspot number was 13, extremely low. according to IPS in Sydney!

On June 26 and 27, the 6 MHz band produced some good signals here in
Melbourne between 9am and noon - that's 2300-0200 UTC.

Of special importance was the Antarctic shortpath propagation mode from
South America, including Chile and Argentina.

Signals from Central and North America were also present, combined shortpath
mode across the Pacific, and longpath across the Middle East. Lots of
shortpath activity from Europe and Asia!

The study of propagation during these daytime windows on the lower frequency
bands (e.g. 6 MHz and 7 MHz) is important!

Regards from Melbourne!
