MONITORING RESEARCH - SPOTLIGHT ON 9 MHZ MID- MORNING

Here in Melbourne, Solar Noon on May 20 2018 occurred at 0216 (1216 local time). This is the time at which the Sun is at its highest elevation, at 32 degrees. This will reduce to 21 degs on June 15. The daylength was 9h56m, which will steadily contract to 9h33m on June 15 2018.

Solar Noon is an important measure of interest to those of us in the professional engineering community studying propagation phenomena in the Colony of Victoria, as it marks the time at which long-haul HF propagation from Europe, the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East and Africa switches from the short (predominantly darkness) path to the long (predominantly daylight) route.

On May 20 2018, the transition from short to long path on 9 MHz started to appear at around 0030  (1030 local) and was complete by 0400 (1400 local).

The crossover effect is traditionally observed on 6 and 7 MHz across the time span 0200 to 0300 (1200 to 1300 local) during June and July.

This is a summary of notable frequency occupancies on May 20 2018, on 9 MHz, between 0000 and 0130.
