Excellent propagation on 7 MHz at noon in Melbourne
Excllent propagation conditions are currently observed here in Melbourne on 7 MHz, from mid-morning, across noon, and into the mid-afternoon. That's the window between 0100 and 0400, with the band open for the full time span.
Between 0100 and 0130, shortpath signals from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East dominate, and from about 0130 to past 0400, longpath mode occurs forthe same regions. North American transmitters on 7 MHz are also audible, via shortpath, from 0130 to 0400 and later.
On 6 MHz, Voz Cristiana, Santiago, Chile, has been giving good signals on 6070 (actually on 6069) for its Spanish service, shortpath mode over theAntarctic region, from fade in at around 2300 to past 0000. This is unusual propagation, local time here is 9 am to 10 am.
I have included a comprehensive summary of these 6MHz and 7MHz propagation events in episode 152 of the Australian DX Report audio news mgazine, which also features news and information about shortwave broadcasting, propagation, further monitoring notes, new schedules, extracts from schedules, and schedule updates.

Adventist World Radio Asia - Wavescan program to close in May
I have received advice from Rhoen Catolico, Assistant Producer, AdventistWorld Radio-Asia, that the long-running weekly English languagecommunications/media/DX Wavescan program will be closed down in May.
This is a consequence of a decision made by AWR Headquarters in the USA.
At present, AWR-Asia programming originates from studios in Singapore - from June, production will be moved to Indonesia.
The Wavescan program is broadcast from KSDA in Guam, and via the Wertachtal (Germany) relay, for a target audience across Asia, the Indian sub-continent, and the Pacific. It is also rebroadcast over WRMI, in the USA.
Since Wavescan's inception some years ago, EDXP has provided major input each month via the Australian DX Report features, for 15 minutes. During the month, Wavescan also includes features contributed from other members of the production team, including Japan, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
From June, this will mean that the only weekly media/communications/DXprogram on SW targeting Asia and the Pacific will be HCJB's DX Partyline, from Kununurra, Western Australia, which has a short version of theAustralian DX Report each month of four minutes duration.
It is not known if AWR-HQ in the USA will produce any regular communications/media/DX type programs after May.

Daytime propagatin excellent in Melbourne!
The present solar cycle, no. 23, remains in a state of limbo, with still no sunspots for the past several months.
Despite this, propagation continues to be excellent on frequencies below 12 MHz during the various "windows" which become available throughout the day and night.
Here in Melbourne, one of these "windows" is in the period 0400 to 0600, with very good propagation now observed on 6, 7, 9, and 11 MHz, dominated by longpath transmission from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and shortpath from the Americas.
I was in the Dandenong Ranges National park today, in the Olinda Forest, 20 km from here, and I spent some time with the Eton E5 connected to a 10m antenna on the Olinda Creek Rd, at the junction with gated Road 19. Road 19 leads to an abandoned farmhouse, now owned by Parks Victoria. This is a location where there is no power line interference.
Of particular interest in the period 0400 to 0530 were some Brazilians on 9 and 11 MHz - propagation from Brazil is rather rare during our daytime, and signal strength was good.
I believe that the "sunspot propagation myth" has now been exploded - good long-distance propagation below 12 MHz during the appropriate periods of the day does not require any sunspot activity at all, and here in Melbourne, the 9 MHz band is now open for the full 24 hours as autumn proceeds.
When sunspot activity resumes, this will of course extend the upper frequency usage for distance propagation, with transmissions on darkness or semi-darkness paths on frequencies up to 30 MHz, and higher!
In the meantime, HF operations over long distances over darkness, or semi-darkness paths, will be more reliable on frequencies below about 12 MHz.
This is a sample of my entries of today between 0430 and 0500, unless stated otherwise - several new relay operations are included:

This is what Stephen Jeske, one of our listeners in the USA, said about episode 133:
"I'm far from being a 'professional' on shortwave, but have been a listener since about 1961. A very well done audio report, easy to understand, and not sounding like a sports-announcer. Very easy style. Thank you!"
And this is from Yimber, our listener in Colombia:
"Hello from Colombia, Great work!! 73 de Yimber"
And from Michael Stevenson, from Port Macquarie, NSW, said this:
"Hello Bob, I very much enjoyed the DX Report 133 with its interesting and useful information and DX tips, thanks for another terrific report that is up to your usual high and professional standard and also for the enjoyable music! Best regards! Michael Stevenson"
